Glamping Guide: The Best Luxury Camp in the Sahara Desert in Morocco

Glamping in Morocco's Sahara Desert

When visiting Morocco you must experience the Sahara desert. There are several tours out there offering from a day trip to an over night trip. We chose to stay at the Desert Luxury Camp in the heart of Erg Chebbi for a full day and one night. Erg Chebbi is one of the two spots in Morocco known for its flowing orange sand dunes. To say the least it was an unforgettable experience and a highlight of our entire trip.

The staff is super friendly and ready to help, which made our experience even more comfortable and unique.

The best time to go to the camp is during Spring. It is not too hot during the day or too cold at night. The camp is closed during the months of July and August due to the high heat.

Luxury Desert Experience

When we first arrived to the Desert Luxury Camp by 4×4 we were impressed how cute a luxury village can be, even in the middle of the desert. We were received with a delicious breakfast buffet as we arrived in the early morning. There is mint lemonade, cookies, cereal, homemade pancakes, olives, orange juice, coffee and much more.

We started our day with a camel ride. It is better to go either  early in the morning or during sunset, otherwise it can get too hot atop a camel. The camel whisperer of the camp picked us up with two beautiful camels. We have ridden camels before but this time was different because it was just us and the desert.

After around half an hour of riding the camel we made a quick stop under the shade for some hot tea and to enjoy the view. The guide wanted to continue on, but the day was getting warm, so we opted to head back towards camp. Something to keep in mind when riding a camel is to hold on tight when the camel stands up because they straighten their back legs first.

During the afternoon we enjoyed some alone time. We went for a walk in the dunes, took a nap in the communal living room tent, drink some tea and cold mint lemonade and of course went sandboarding. It was our first time sandboarding, but since we have snowboarded before, it was easy to pick up. Rushing down the hill on a board is super fun, just be prepared for your pockets to fill with sand if you ever fall!

As the sun began to set, we headed back to the dining tent for dinner. We had the traditional Moroccan foods of tender beef tagine and chicken couscous with fresh fruit for dessert. There was so much delicious food we were sad we could not eat it all. After dinner the whole camp got together around a bonfire to enjoy a beautiful traditional Berber dancing and singing show.

To end the night with a perfect memory we headed out into the sand dunes to enjoy the endless stars in the sky. The night sky is unbelievable without light pollution. If we were not so tired from the long day, we could have spent all night staring out into the galaxy.

It is also the best place to practice your long exposure star photography. Unfortunately for us it was a windy night so our nighttime photos ended up blurry, even with a tripod. If it is windy head to the bottom of the sand dunes where it is not so windy to prevent the camera from shaking.

We headed back to our text to drift to sleep with the memories of the sky fresh in our eyes and our stomachs full of delicious food.

Comfortable Tent Accommodations

The tents are a little oasis in the middle of the desert. Each tent offers a big comfortable bed and a small living room where you can seat down and do either some work or just enjoy a nice talk. It also has a private bathroom attached with a shower, sink and toilet. The shower has hot and cold water. Even in the dessert, the bedroom has everything you need from a closet to a suitcase stand.

Outside the tent there is a table and chairs where you can relax and enjoy the stunning views of the dunes. It is the perfect place to drink some complimentary mint lemonade and eat some delicious cookies and chips.

The camp also has several communal living room tents where you can hang out with other people. There is also a communal tent made of sticks, making it the coolest place to duck out of the hot afternoon sun.

Everything about our stay with Desert Luxury Camp was top notch. Its high quality service and amazing staff left us excited for the next opportunity to head out into the deserts of Morocco!
